Methods: This study used questionnaire and clinical data from two large multiethnic cohorts, the California Men’s Health Study (CMHS) and Research Program in Genes, Environment and Health (RPGEH). Diabetes characteristics data were derived from questionnaire and Diabetes Registry data. LUTS were measured using a standardized scale. Socioeconomic and comorbidity data were obtained by self-report. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between baseline DM status and prevalence and incidence of LUTS, with adjustment for potential confounding variables. Results: We found type 2 diabetes to be associated with prevalent LUTS (odds ratio (OR) = 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.26, 1.38). The association was stronger among men with type 2 diabetes who were on active pharmaceutical treatment and had it for a longer duration. No association was observed between type 2 diabetes and new onset LUTS. Conclusions: Type 2 diabetes increases the risk of LUTS.

Impact of type 2 diabetes on lower urinary tract symptoms in men: a cohort study
BACKGROUND Studies of the impact of type 2 diabetes on the prevalence and incidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among men have provided divergent results. We sought to examine this issue using two large and diverse cohorts. METHODS This study used questionnaire and clinical data from two large multiethnic cohorts, the California Men's Health Study (CMHS) and Research Program in Gen...
متن کاملEffect of Intensive Glycemic Control and Diabetes Complications on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men With Type 1 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE Although diabetes is known to result in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men, it remains unclear if glycemic control can mitigate urinary symptoms. We studied how diabetic characteristics are related to LUTS in the men who completed the urological assessment component (UroEDIC) of the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) follow-up study of the Diabetes...
متن کاملPsychometric properties of the Male Urogenital Distress Inventory (MUDI) and Male Urinary Symptom Impact Questionnaire (MUSIQ) in patients following radical prostatectomy.
INTRODUCTION Research instruments can be used to assess the impact of lower urinary tract symptoms on health-related quality of life. Evaluating the reliability, validity, and sensitivity of two of these instruments provides evidence concerning their readiness for use in research and clinical settings. OBJECTIVE The researchers evaluated psychometric properties of the Male Urogenital Distress...

Two brothers with DIDMOAD syndrome are reported. The older brother has diabetes mellitus (type I), diabetes insipidus, optic atrophy, deafness and atonia of the urinary tract with severe symptoms such as diabetic ketoacidosis and frequent urinary tract infections. His younger brother had the same manifestations but with less severity. We report the findings of our two patients and compare ...
متن کاملCohort profile: the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) survey.
The Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey is a community-based, random sample, epidemiologic cohort of n = 5502 Boston (MA) residents. The baseline BACH Survey (2002-05) was designed to explore the mechanisms conferring increased health risks on minority populations with a particular focus on urologic signs/symptoms and type 2 diabetes. To this end, the cohort was designed to include adequ...
